Good reads for 6-9 year olds !

Just before his 8th Birthday, we asked our son NEEV, what presents he would like on his birthday? Just like any other kid, he had a long list of usual toys – LEGO, NERF, X-box, cricket kit and so on…

But also, he sheepishly asked us, “Can you buy me a bookstore?I’d love to read all the books I can!” We exclaimed, ” Why not!!! You can build up your own library, will be so much fun!”

The odds of having a bookworm child were always high. I am married to a voracious reader, who picks up a book at dawn and it’s done and dusted by dusk. Even I love to keep a book by my bed side, read it or not! 😊

Leaving a trail for those who would like to pick up some tried, tested, and approved reads for and by a 6-9 year old. Here are a few small and unedited reviews, by a fervent reader, Neev.

Geronimo Stilton Series 

In the series, the title character is an anthropomorphic mouse who lives in New Mouse City on Mouse Island. A best-selling author, Geronimo Stilton works as a journalist.Geronimo is a nervous, mild-mannered mouse who would like nothing better than to live a quiet life, but he keeps getting involved in faraway adventures with his relatives Thea, Trap, and Benjamin, and sometimes Aunt Sweetfur. The books are written as though they are autobiographical adventure stories.

Neev: I like this series because some stories are spooky, and some stories give cool facts. I love reading them as Trap troubles Geronimo in funny ways. Also, Geronimo’s friend Hercules Poitrat, plays jokes on Geronimo which is really funny!

Famous Five by Enid Blyton

The novels feature the adventures of a group of young children – Julian, Dick, Anne and Georgina (George) – and their dog Timmy. The stories take place in the children’s school holidays after they have returned from their respective boarding schools. Each time they meet they get caught up in an adventure, often involving criminals or lost treasure. In some books the children go camping in the countryside, on a hike or holiday together elsewhere.

Neev: Famous Five are full of adventure. These kids go on holidays, camping, George’s home island and farm and fall into an adventure. The dog Timmy is very very funny and does silly things like chasing an imaginary rabbit and licking everyone and so on …

Diary of a Wimpy Kid

The book is about a boy named Greg Heffley and his attempts to become popular in middle school.

Neev: Its actually very boring book. But the cartoon prints are really good. So, you can try one.

Childcraft Series

Childcraft series is a kind of encyclopaedia for young children, with simple texts and illustrations.

Neev: I read these because they are papa’s books when he was a kid. It is filled with information. It has good craft and project ideas. Also, these books tell me how things were in the early days 

 Read & Shine series by Pegasus for kids

Read and Shine is graded reading program for children ranging from Kindergarten to Level 8. Offers variety of stories with includes original stories, abridged classics, fairy tales. They have a variety of themes, topics, interesting plots and memorable characters. The books in this series are written in simple, lucid and concise manner.

Neev: These books are very informative and they have lot of new words.
